Which of the following statements would you most expect me to proclaim: I am superior in some way to everyone I meet, or Everyone I meet is superior in some way to me?
Please fully consider that question.
The funny thing about those two statements is that they say the same thing from two opposing perspectives. The second is from someone who can learn from anyone he meets. The first is an arrogant ass.
Both statements are substatements deduced from the larger idea that Each person is superior in at least one regard to each individual person on Earth.
Obviously my point is that I'm concerned whether I am self-focused or focused on those around me, which in a way implies the answer.
Step one is admitting your problem. Check.
I decided I can, and would like to, change this behavior. Form new habits. I'll start by addressing some of those closest to me and stating how they are superior. Perhaps later we can have conversations on what tricks and perspectives lead to your respective expertise.
Clint: You are more disciplined in your daily routine than anyone else I know. You stick to the schedule you put in your head and execute.
Mark: My first idea was to mention how you seem able to fix or build almost anything, but you're better than that. Truthfully, I respect most your ability to make impossibly complicated and important decisions, and make them correctly. It took me 18 years to understand one of them, and I'm not certain I can ever show how appreciative I am that you are the man you are. I love you.
Shane: You've always been the protector. Mostly I've seen this directed towards me, but obviously there are other recent examples. There's something about a friend in need that makes you forget about yourself. I also could have talked about your jump shot.
Judy: You are the most professional person I know. Your integrity and business judgment are first class. I love you.
Travis: Your brain functions at a level that I can't explain. I often remember the line "You're more advanced than a cockroach, but have you ever tried explaining yourself to one?" when I think of you. I wonder, would I understand even if you tried telling me how you are wired?
Melissa: You're just the most innocent and giving person I'll ever let into my life. It scares me, because who am I to think I can rise to the example you set!
Heather: Your ambition is unlike any other college student, which is saying something. Your drive to achieve what you want keeps me headed in the right direction.
Zac: I don't understand how you switch from being So selfish at times, like how the world stops when you hunt, with being So unconditionally selfless. I don't understand it! But I do believe that if anyone in this family needed one of your body parts to survive, you'd offer it even if you also needed it to survive. You have all the family loyalty we could ever ask from you. Just as some Comedian's acts are too complex for certain audiences to enjoy, your example holds this family together in ways that're not always apparent.
I'm leaving off a few of the others I have in mind. I invite you to send me one area that you are superior to me and one that I am superior to you, whether you are listed above or not.
Let's share our techniques and thoughts and perspectives. Every little bee contributes to the success of the hive.
You were there.
